The Tale of Two Continents: A Comparison of America and Europe in Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence and the House of Mirth

Abstract
Edith Wharton is one the peculiar modern writers of the twentieth century in American Literature. In her two acclaimed novels The Age of Innocence and The House of Mirth, the protagonists belonging to the American upper class society which permits exceedingly little milieu to approach. However, Europe, especially Paris, is a place where everybody can freely express and behavior. In this study, the two continents are compared with their characteristics of women independence, limitation and lifestyle.
