“Regular Pain” And the Pain of Injury: Pain Perception among Brazilian Olympic Athletes
Katia Rubio, Flavio de Godoy Moreira

Abstract
Pain is pointed as a limiter event for the sportive performance, especially because of the association made between this manifestation and the possibilities of injury. Nevertheless, few studies have been realized connecting the relation between pain and the limitations in sportive performance. This study has as objective to show how high-performance Brazilian athletes perceive and manifest the relation with pain during their careers. For such, the methodology utilized was the life stories. In these statements it was possible to verify that athletes present two different perceptions of pain: one is directly related to training effort and the other one refers to injury situations. The contacts and overcomings of these situations depend on the subjective and social conditions in which the athlete is inserted. Comprehending and controlling this process may be the key for a victorious career.
