Appraising the Evolution and Sources of Co-operative Societies Law in Nigeria
Yebisi, E. T.
Abstract
This work traces the evolution and the sources of co-operative societies law in Nigeria and notes that, although
the co-operative concept itself is not alien to Nigeria, the first co-operative societies law in Nigeria was fashioned
after the classical British-Indian pattern, which even after independence, still retains its colonial vestiges. The
paper also notes that contrary to vehemently opposed views the Nigerian Co-operative Societies Act, 2004 is the
supreme law on co-operative societies in Nigeria and regrets that a law made to address the socio-economic
adversity of a largely rural population does not have customary law as one of its sources.
