The Konkomba Yam Market: A Study of a Migrant Community in an Urban Setting
Longi Felix Y.T, Cletus KwakuMbowura
Abstract
Established in 1982, the Konkomba Yam Market has become a migrant community for Konkombas and other
immigrants of northern extraction in Accra, a vibrant commercial centre and a hub of Konkomba enlightenment.
Nonetheless, the Market has become prone to frequent fire outbreaks while its peripheries have become scenes of
criminal activities in Accra. This paper outlines the processes leading to the establishment of the Konkomba Yam
Market and examines its impact on the socio-economic life of the Konkomba.
