Boundary Conflict and Security Challenges in the Western Coast of the Niger Delta: The Ilaje-Ijo War Factor, 1998-99
Ehinmore Omolere. M. PhD
Abstract
One of the problematic issues on African sustainable development in recent times has been that of
insecurity. The paper discusses security problems in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria and the effects on
regional and national development. Using the Ilaje/Ijo war of 1998 as a case study, the paper identifies
some economic, social and political factors as the causes of the war. It also explores the geographical
peculiarities of the region to explain the special features of the war. Central to the discussion are the
lingering socio-economic consequences of the war in relation to general socio-economic problems it has
created in the region. The paper makes some recommendations on how inter-communal conflicts could
be curbed in the African communities.
