Benard Kibet Malakwen
Abstract
This study sought to investigate the media initiatives in building peaceful inter-communal relations in Kenya,
taking a case study of Uasin Gishu County. The study established that as the Fourth Estate, they provide checks
and balances on the activities of the three arms of government. Media initiatives in the society cover political,
economic and social issues. The study recommends the training and retooling of media practitioners so as to reorient
them to framing and reframing their presentations and interpretation of messages so that those likely to
ignite tension and conflict can be avoided. It further recommends that the concept of conflict sensitive journalism
as a course in the training of media practitioners be made mandatory.
