Social Responsibility, Human Rights and Wind Energy: Oaxaca and Chiapas, Mexico

Abstract
This study is based on the concept social responsibility in business (SRB). Its objective is to identify SRB
standards by examining several definitions of the concept, as well as public policy oriented to promoting SRB
rights among wind energy businesses. Specifically, typical characteristics of public policy in the voluntary and
obligatory promotion of SRB rights are examined in two wind energy businesses. They are located in the Isthmus
of Tehuantepec region of Oaxaca, Mexico and the Pacific coastal region of the state of Chiapas. Nascent social
responsibility was observed among private and public organizations. Government stood out in its interest in
implementing public policy with a human rights focus.
