Abstract
The African American creative arts of dance, music, literature, theater and visual art have changed over time
since arriving with the slave ships. These changes are a manifestation of political, educational and economic
evolution as well as assimilation. As the life experiences of African Americans changed, from slavery through the
Harlem Renaissance, their creative activities have reflected it.
