Laicism and Education Ensuing Problems in Italy
Anna Maria Passaseo, Ph.D.
Abstract
In a democratic society like Italy, marked by an ever increasing pluralism and multiculturalism, citizen is
required to a careful re-thinking of his role and an awareness of the functions that he is called to exercise within
public life. In reference to these functions, he can develop and strengthen specific capabilities that call into
question the education. Building a lay space, which allows the coexistence of different ideologies and views of the
world, on the basis of mutual respect and respect for dissent regarding particular moral systems or deep beliefs,
appears inevitable. This is a skill that can become the focus of educational care. This paper aims at clarifying and
arguing such hypothesis.
