Abstract
This paper discusses the differences between rules and practices regarding the marriage during the Spanish
Conquest, 1521-1555. In this period, monogamy was imposed by the new power structures. However, in practice
illegal male polygamy was accepted while monogamy was established for women and for the vanquished, who
were stigmatized from Christian conceptions and regulations.
